Alberta has been a strong and consistent supporter of removing barriers to trade within Canada and internationally as a key means to open markets for Alberta’s products and services. As the Ministry responsible for Alberta's overall trade policy, IIR:
- leads Alberta's overall participation in the negotiation of domestic and international trade agreements
- coordinates Alberta's approach to implementing concluded agreements
- manages and defends disputes involving Alberta that may arise under those agreements.
