North Asia Relations

Alberta has strong trade and social ties with many countries in the North Asia Region. 

  • The North Asia region is the second most important export destination accounting for 42% of Alberta's non-U.S. exports. 
  • Overall, exports to the region increased from $5.1 billion in 2007 to $5.9 billion in 2008.
  • Since 2004, China has been the second largest market for Alberta after the United States.  Japan is Alberta's third most important export destination. 
  • Three of the province's oldest twinning relationships are with areas in this region, including Heilongjiang, China; Hokkaido, Japan; and Gangwon, South Korea.
