Alberta Washington, D.C. Office
The Alberta Office in Washington, D.C. promotes Alberta’s economic and policy interests in key areas, such as energy, environment and agriculture.
Priorities include reinforcing to U.S. political and business decision-makers that Alberta:
- has the commitment and capacity to be a secure, reliable and growing energy supplier
- develops its world-scale energy resources in an environmentally responsible way
- contributes to enhanced North American agricultural competitiveness
- is a desirable place in which to live, work, travel, study, invest and conduct research
Gary Mar, Q.C. is the official representative (Minister-Counsellor) of the Province of Alberta to the United States of America. Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach named him to lead the Alberta Office in Washington, D.C. on December 3, 2007.
The Alberta Office in Washington, D.C. began operating in October 2004. It is co-located in the Canadian Embassy.

The United States is Alberta’s largest and most important market. Almost 90 per cent of Alberta’s exports go to the U.S. Of Alberta’s top 25 trading partners, 21 are American states. The U.S. is the source of more than 60 per cent of Alberta’s foreign investment and tourism.
Alberta participates in a number of organizations with membership from both sides of the border. These include the Pacific NorthWest Economic Region (PNWER); Can/Am Border Trade Alliance; Council of State Governments; the Energy Council; the National Association of State Directors of Agriculture; and bilateral councils with the states of Montana and Alaska.
