Council of the Federation
The Council of the Federation was established on December 5, 2003. It is a forum for provincial and territorial premiers to discuss and work together on issues of mutual interest or concern. In October 2003, Alberta and British Columbia held the first of what would become a series of annual joint Premiers and Ministers' Meetings. The October 2003 meeting was held in Calgary, Alberta. Alberta Premier Ralph Klein and B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell signed a Protocol of Cooperation that committed both provincial governments to working more closely together to the benefit of the provinces and the country as a whole. In September 2008, Alberta and Saskatchewan held the first joint Premiers and Ministers' Meeting between the two provinces. The inaugural meeting was held in Llyodminster. Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach and Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall signed a Protocol of Cooperation that committed both provincial governments to working more closely together to the benefit of the provinces and the country as a whole. On September 11, 2009 Premiers Stelmach and Fentie signed an Alberta-Yukon Intergovernmental Relations Accord to promote cooperation between Alberta and Yukon on matters of mutual interest. The Accord will promote information-sharing between the jurisdictions and identify opportunities for enhanced formal and informal cooperation.Read more
